Since radiation is colorless and odorless, the public is often concerned that they may be exposed to radiation without it being detected. Of course, the public is always exposed to some radiation, because it is naturally occurring. The important distinction is to detect any radiation in the environment that is above background.
There are a number of environmental monitoring programs which are designed to detect radiation in the environs. Some of them provide instantaneous data, while others depend on the collection of samples, analysis, and comparing results with previous data to see if there in any accumulation of radiation in the environment.
These sites provide information about environmental monitoring systems.
