There's still time to sign up for the Health Physics Society's
Professional Development School

16-19 July, 2009

Make your back-to-school plans and register for the 32nd Annual Professional Development School (PDS) to be held at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

The topic for the PDS is Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material & Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM/TENORM).  The textbook has been sent to the printer, so why not take advantage of the opportunity to get the information straight from the authors of what will surely be the definitive collection of chapters on this most indefinite topic!

Andy Karam, Academic Dean 2009 Professional Development School, Health Physics Society: NORM/TENORM is a real concern to health physicists as well as to professionals in waste management, mineral extraction, petroleum and natural gas, and so on; the more we mine and drill, the more NORM and TENORM we generate.  With the exception of medical procedures, it's quite likely that more people are exposed to radiation via NORM/TENORM than virtually anything else.  At the same time, the regulations have changed quite a bit since the last time this topic was offered at a PDS."

Anyone in the radiological health field who works with NORM and TENORM in any capacity (regulators, radiation safety officers, consultants, etc.), as well as anyone who is interested in learning more about the topic would benefit from attending the PDS in Minneapolis this summer.

The curriculum includes covering the fundamental science behind the distribution and concentration of NORM/TENORM, presenting radiation safety considerations, and reviewing the regulatory framework and legal aspects related to these issues.

For all of the items that have to do with the PDS in Minneapolis, go to the HPS Web site.  On-line registration is available this year for the PDS.  You may also register by submitting a hard copy of the registration form via fax with credit card information or mail with a check.

The curriculum, faculty and chapter abstracts may be found on-line at 2009 PDS curriculum.

Hotel reservations are available online or by calling the Holiday Inn Metrodome at 1-800-448-3663.  Ask for the HPS group rate of $115.00 per night.

We look forward to seeing you back in school!
