CRCPD RESOLUTION
[5/16/83]

Relating to: MANDATORY USE OF ACCREDITED DOSIMETRY

WHEREAS, personnel dosimetry measurements serve as the basis for licensee and state regulatory agency records of external radiation doses to workers; and

WHEREAS, accurate personnel dosimetry assessments are necessary for health, economic, and legal reasons; and

WHEREAS, it is well known that the accuracy of dose estimates reported by some personnel dosimetry processors has not been within acceptable limits; and

WHEREAS, recent testing by the University of Michigan under contract to the NRC has substantiated poor performance by some personnel dosimetry processors; and

WHEREAS, a standard for testing the performance of personnel dosimetry processors has been developed and adopted by the Health Physics Society; and

WHEREAS, the Health Physics personnel dosimetry processor testing standard has been adopted by the American National Standards Institute, effective September, 1982; and

WHEREAS. a personnel dosimetry processor accreditation program has been established by the National Bureau of Standards' National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) for processors passing the testing standard; and

WHEREAS, a mandatory accreditation program is necessary as evidenced by the National Sanitation Foundation's (NSF) experience in certifying personnel dosimetry processors during the 1960's,

NOW BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors, Inc., urges its members to adopt a policy which mandates the use of accredited personnel dosimetry services.
