Dr. James W. Miller was instrumental in the establishment of CRCPD. Dr. Miller provided guidance and direction in the early stages of the formation of this organization. Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Miller assisted CRCPD in obtaining the federal support required to sustain the newly formed conference. He developed and coordinated the first meeting of CRCPD held in 1968 in Montgomery, Alabama. For over 20 years after the formation of CRCPD, Dr. Miller served as an invaluable federal resource to the CRCPD Board of Directors. Many of the accomplishments of CRCPD can be traced to the wise direction of Dr. Miller. It is because of his significant impact on CRCPD that an award in his name has been established.

Dr. Miller was a 30 year employee of the Food and Drug administration as well as a strong supporter of radiation control programs nationwide. He worked very closely with state and local officials in radiation control programs. One of Dr. Miller's best qualities was his encouragement and nurture of career advancement for individuals that performed the routine and day-to-day tasks of radiation protection. The James W. Miller Award was established to recognize these hardworking professionals.
