Charles M. Hardin was the first Executive Secretary and then
Executive Director of the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors,
Inc. Chuck started with CRCPD February 1981 and retired July 1, 2002.
He developed the organization from a great idea into a strong national
association for consistency and excellence in radiation protection
regulation.
His interaction with numerous federal agencies on behalf of
state radiation protection programs provided critical funding needed by
state regulators to develop the Suggested State Regulations for Control of
Radiation and continued funding provided for the National Conference on
Radiation Control and the National Radon Conference.
Below is a sample of Chuck's
involvement with CRCPD.
- Assisted in the
writing of the first CRCPD Constitution and Bylaws
- Primarily responsible
for the CRCPD logo design
- Chairperson of CRCPD
for the 1974-1975 year
- Chairperson of the
first NEXT Committee
- Chairperson of the
first Committee on Radioactive Waste
- Chairperson of the
first Committee on Quality Assurance in Diagnostic X-Ray
- Was first an Associate
Member then became a Director Member while employed with the
Kentucky Radiation Control Program for 18 years
- In 1993, received the
Gerald S. Parker Award of Merit, CRCPD’s most prestigious award
- In 1995, chosen as the
“Hartman Orator” for celebration of the 100th anniversary of the
discovery of X-Rays
- Attended 32 of the 34
CRCPD annual meetings
- Served as CRCPD’s
first Executive Director for 21˝ years

Chuck has been one of the cornerstones that has helped CRCPD to
mature into the organization it is today. He had an untiring
dedication to the Board of Directors, the members, and to his
staff.
